"Remembrance restores possibility to the past, making what happened incomplete and completing what never was.”
Giorgio Agamben - Potentialities: Collected Essays in Philosophy
self-memory-system
self-memory-system is an ongoing project exploring autobiographical memory or the constant reconstruction of self through memories. It is a body of work that tries to illustrate the concept of a constructed autobiographical narrative, our edited self, that both informs and is informed by our aspirations and character.
In Theory
Autobiographical memory is an active and creative process. Our memory is not linear, to remember we form the abstract into a story; a version of our experience that fits with our present perceived identity.
In Practice
In practice images, often taken with a disposable camera, are broken down and rebuilt as digital collage or illustration. The act is as important as the final piece, representing how we selectively remember our past. The memory becomes an artefact but like memory these images are never finished.
